Hiking in the Harz mountains - an active experience for the whole family

If you would like to explore the region on foot or by bike during your holiday in the Harz, the region offers plenty of opportunities to do so. For this we recommend a trip to the beautiful national park: The Kaiserturm, the Agnesberg or the Plessenburg mountains are just three of many destinations that you can reach by bike or on foot from our hotel.

Kaiserturm / via Armeleuteberg: Breathtaking views of the castle and of Wernigerode await on a walk or mountain biking tour to the Kaiserturm mountain. The trail also offers plenty of places where you can stop for a picnic.

On foot: Starting at our hotel in Wernigerode, head towards the Westerntor, turn left onto Salzbergstraße and then pass the Goethe monument (commemorating his journey to the Harz in the year 1777). Follow the steps behind the former women's hospital on the right (known as the "winde") which lead to Hermann-Löns-Weg. Then take the Triftweg which leads you to the Försterplatz.

By bicycle: Starting at our hotel in Wernigerode, head towards the Westerntor, then take the Salzbergstraße towards Amelungsweg. Then turn right. The Armeleuteberg and Kaiserturm mountains are well sign-posted from here.

Not enough? Why not head to Agnesberg or Plessenburg?

Agnesberg: This is a particularly rewarding hike. Because this is the only mountain from which you can see the Wernigerode castle. This is also a great location for a picnic.

Starting at our hotel in Wernigerode, head towards the Mühlental and pass the Theobaldifriedhof cemetary and continue towards the Christianental. Walk through the wildlife park until you reach the "Schönen Eichenplatz", before taking the Marienweg on the left towards Agnesberg.

Plessenburg: Great for hiking and mountain biking. Take the Harzquerbahn railway to the Drei-Annen-Hohne station. After nine kilometres you will reach the Oberen Hohneweg.
